Fiennders Abbey

Hello everyone ! How are you ? I hope you've all had a great summer !
Today I'm going to talk to you about Fiennders Abbey, one of the books I've read during my summer holidays.

Fiennders Abbey is a book written by Jean Marsh and first published in 1996.
The book is set in rural England at the end of the nineteenth century and tells the story of the protagonist Mary Bowden.
Here's what is written on the back cover :
"Mary Bowden is pretty, intelligent and ambitious. She is also daughter of the gamekeeper at Fiennders Abbey. Her close childhood friendship with Richard, son of Thomas Fiennders and heir to the estate, is quickly threatened as they grow older. Richard is destined for Oxford and business ; Mary for life as a tradesman's wife, and motherhood. As forces conspire to keep them separate, their enduring affection is tested even more."

Although this might be a very simple and classical plot, there are a lot of side characters, each with their own story to tell, such as Ann (the mistress of the house and Richard's mother), who has a secret affair with the gardener.

A particular feature of the novel is that, even if most of the book takes place at the end of the nineteenth century, the final chapters are set in the 1940's and the 1990's, which I found a little bit confusing at the beginning, because there are many new characters, who are in fact the descendants of Mary Bowden an the other main characters, and their story is a bit disconnected from the main plot.

Otherwise, I think this novel pictures very well life in rural england at that time, although it is not really a historical novel.

Overall, this is a very beautiful novel, very gripping and emotional. I strongly recommend it to you. :)

La délicatesse

La délicatesse de David Foenkinos est un roman paru en 2009 et qui a reçu 10 prix littéraires. Ce roman a été également objet d'une adaptation au cinéma réalisée par David et Stéphane Foenkinos, en 2011, avec les acteurs Audrey Tautou et François Damien.

J'ai lu ce roman comme une de mes lectures d'été, puisque j'avais entendu qu'il était bien et agréable à lire. D'un côté, il m'a plu, mais d'un autre côté, il m'a déçu.

Ce roman porte très bien son titre, en effet, l'écriture est soignée, délicate. L'action est menée de manière fluide et légère mais par moments, un peu trop, ce qui donne une sensation de superficialité. On perçoit que le langage est travaillé, il y a des phrases ou des paragraphes où l'on voit que l'auteur a dédié plus de temps à les écrire que d'autres, comme par exemple le passage qui apparait sur la quatrième de couverture.
Cependant, l'auteur insère des détails inutiles qui n'avancent pas l'action et même des mini-chapitres dans lesquels on peut avoir du mal à voir leur but, comme celui où sont marqués les résultats des matchs de foot.

Le début du livre est saisissant, prometteur et donne envie de lire, mais lorsqu'on avance, le livre devient de plus en plus ennuyant. Personellement, je n'ai pas aimé la fin de l'histoire, parce qu'elle est un peu brusque et ne dit pas ce qui arrivera aux personnages, en particulier dans le plan professionel, même si beaucoup d'importance était donnée tout au long du roman.

Après écrie ce post, j'ai décidé de rechercher d'autres critiques, pour connaître l'avis d'autres lecteurs et à ma grande surprise, la majorité des critiques étaient similaires.
Pour finir, je recommande ce livre parce qu'il est agréable, tendre et gentil à lire et voici la bande annonce du film qui est basé sur le livre.
